Since breaking ground in Summer 2017 the Graham Farrans Joint Venture have made significant progress on the A6 Randalstown - Castledawson Dualling Scheme with 15/21 Structures underway, 5 Borrow Pits in operation , a considerable amount of earthworks complete and the first layer of pavement being laid.
The first bridge opens to live traffic...
The A6 Dualling Scheme first overbridge structure, on the Ballynafey Road, opened on 16 July 2018. The new bridge will carry traffic from the Ballynafey and Ranaghan roads over the new dual carriageway and will maintain the important link for the local community between Moneynick Road and Staffordstown Road.
40 Blasts Have Taken Place To Date on the A6 Dualling Scheme...
6 Borrow Pits are in use on the A6 Dualling Scheme with 40 blasts taking place on the A6 Dualling Scheme to date, with 25 blasts in Borrow Pit K & the mainline route, 14 blasts in Borrow Pit P and 1 blast beside the M22.
Approximately 2 further blasts are planned to take place in Borrow Pit P and the processing of all aggregates for Zone 2 is now complete, the team will now be processing drainage materials.
Over 340,000 m3 of stone has been sustainably sourced from the site borrow pits saving 850T in C02 emissions. By sourcing and processing the stone on site the Graham Farrans Joint Venture have significantly reduced the carbon footprint of the scheme and enabled 99.9% of site waste to be diverted from landfill.
58 Beams have been Lifted to Date on the A6 Dualling Scheme...
15/21 Structures are now under construction, with 58 beams lifted into place to date and one bridge opened to the public. Over the past year the structures team have installed 4 box culverts and have constructed 7 overbridges and 1 footbridge. The team have also completed piling works at the Brough Road North and are progressing well at Aughrim Lane with beams arriving to be installed on Tuesday 21 August 2018.
Works are now beginning on the final structure in Zone 2 - Pearsons Accommodation Overbridge and piling works have been completed on the project's biggest structure at the Deerpark Road.
Looking forward works on the Castledawson Roundabout footbridges are expected to begin in Autumn / Winter 2018.
Earthworks & Drainage in Zone 1 & 2 make great progress, during recent good weather...
Earthworks and drainage works along the route of the new A6 Dualling Scheme between Randalstown and Castledawson have been making excellent progress, taking full advantage of the recent good weather.
At Randalstown the team have been preparing the link road, ready for pavement to be laid from 20 August 2018 and have been continuing with the mainline cut and rock extraction. Capping works on the eastbound carriageway have been taking place towards the Derrygowan Road, where works are ongoing on embankments. Further along the route towards Dobbin's Lane slip forming has been taking place and the team are preparing for mainline blacktop in September 2018.
In Zone 1 earthworks and drainage have been making great progress with dig and replace works completed earlier in the year between Moyola River and Brough Road. Further along the live carriageway between Bellshill and the Castledawson Roundabout mainline drainage, slope drainage and kerbing has been installed and a layer of capping laid.
Works between Creagh Roundabout and Deerpark Road have also been making excellent progress during the recent good weather with embankments being constructed and works in Borrow Pit E well underway. Works in this area are due to stop by 30 September 2018 and recommence in spring 2019.
The first pavement is laid, slip forming begins and the Park & Ride takes shape ...
In Zone 2 mainline drainage is being laid between Ballynafey and Structure 25, preparations are underway for slip forming between Ivy Burn and the Gallagh Road and capping has been installed on the westbound carriageway.
At the new park and ride facility the pavement, white lining and kerbing works are now complete, signage has been erected and a new bus shelter installed. Works on the areas footpaths, charging points and lighting columns will commence later this week and the pedestrian footbridge is also nearing completion with final pieces of handrail being fitted.
