Over the last week road users will have begun to see a number of bridge structures pop up along the A6 route.

Significant progress on the A6 Dualling Scheme

In early December a 500 tonne crane was used to lift a total of 10 precast beams into place on the project’s first bridge structure at Derrygowan Road, towards the M22 end of the scheme.

More recently, over the weekend of the 10-11th March, the installation of the bridge beams at Bellshill Road, Castledawson, was completed.  This again required a 500 tonne crane to lift 8 beams, approximately 27 metres in length and weighing 55 tonnes each.

Works underway this week included the deck pour of the Derrygowan bridge and the installation of 10 beams measuring 35 metres and weighing 64 tonnes for a bridge at Ballynafey Road, which is near Moneynick Primary School.

In the coming weeks bridge beams will also be installed at Randalstown West and over the Moyola River, and a steel footbridge will be erected at the Drumderg roundabout which is the first junction on the existing Toome bypass when travelling north.

The travelling public will be pleased to hear that there are no weekend closures planned for the upcoming holiday weekends of St Patrick’s Day (16 – 19 March) and Easter (30 March – 2 April).

We would like to once again thank local residents and road users for their patience and support during these works.
